There are places you read about. And there are places you have to see with your own eyes. The High Coast in Sweden is one of them.
A landscape that is still rising
The High Coast stretches along Sweden’s northern coastline between Härnösand and Örnsköldsvik. During the last ice age, a sheet of ice three kilometres thick pressed the earth’s crust down. When the ice melted about 10,500 years ago, the land began to rise again – and it hasn’t stopped. Since then the ground has risen 286 metres, more than anywhere else in the world. It is still rising by around 8 millimetres a year.
That is why the High Coast became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, joined in 2006 by the Kvarken Archipelago in Finland. You see the result everywhere: steep cliffs of red granite, ancient beaches high up in the forest, deep bays and islands that rose from the sea. Just offshore lies the Baltic’s deepest point, Ulvödjupet, at 293 metres, and Sweden’s highest island, Mjältön, at 236 metres above sea level.
Why now?
The High Coast has become one of Sweden’s most talked-about destinations, and the region aims to be a top international destination by 2030. Yet silence is still easy to find. Come outside peak season, take your time, and you will often have the trail, the jetty or the view all to yourself.
The most beautiful places
- Skuleberget. A 295-metre mountain where the world’s highest coastline runs, 286 metres above sea level. Hike up, take the chairlift or climb the via ferrata. Don’t miss the King’s Cave and Naturum Höga Kusten at its foot.
- Skuleskogen National Park. Old forest, steep trails and the famous Slåttdalsskrevan gorge. The view from Slåttdalsberget is one of the finest on the coast.
- The High Coast Bridge. 1,867 metres long across the mouth of the Ångermanälven river, opened in 1997. Stop at the viewpoint by the northern end and watch it reflected in the water.
- Ulvön, Trysunda and Grisslan. The archipelago’s best-known islands, with red fishing villages, small chapels and boat trips from the mainland.
- Rotsidan. Smooth, rounded rocks sloping straight into the sea. Perfect for an evening at sunset.
- The High Coast Trail. 135 kilometres of hiking in nine stages, from Hornöberget by the bridge to Örnsköldsvik. You don’t have to walk it all – one stage makes a memorable day.
- The Ångermanälven river. The wide river that flows past us in Undrom towards the sea. It is also home to High Coast Distillery, our partner.
The High Coast through the year
Our place on the High Coast
Our homestead, Glamping Höga Kusten, lies in Undrom by the Ångermanälven river, in the heart of the High Coast region. It is the perfect base for beautiful day trips: hike Skuleberget, walk a stage of the High Coast Trail, take the boat to Ulvön or watch the sunset over the bridge – and come home to peace and quiet in the evening.
You sleep in Hillside, our off-grid A-frame cabin on the hill, surrounded by forest and sheep. After a day out, warm up in the wood-fired sauna while the Nordic Mamma cooks dinner over the open fire with local ingredients. The next morning breakfast is waiting, and the High Coast is yours again.
